U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE

STATEMENT BY ASSISTANT SECRETARY BRIAN A. NICHOLS
February 2, 2023
Welcoming Belize’s Humanitarian Resettlement of Majid Khan
The Government of Belize’s decision to resettle Majid Khan, who has completed his sentence on charges brought by the Office of Military Commissions in Guantanamo Bay, represents an important humanitarian gesture. Mr. Khan entered a plea agreement in 2012, and since that time has fully cooperated with the U.S. government.
Belize’s commitment to human rights, as evidenced by its generous support in working with the United States to resettle Mr. Khan in a safe and secure setting, is a credit to the people of Belize and its government. In welcoming Mr. Khan to Belize, its people again demonstrate the tolerance and openness for which they are known. I am grateful for this cooperation and our strong partnership with Belize.
The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to responsibly closing the Guantanamo Bay Detention Facility, which would not be possible without the support of our friends and allies.
