Weather Alert – U.S. Embassy Belmopan, Belize

Event:   TROPICAL STORM IN THE CENTRAL CARIBBEAN

The National Meteorological Service of Belize and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) predict Tropical Storm Lisa will strengthen as it crosses the Caribbean and approaches Belize over the next 48 hours.  NEMO forecasts landfall late Wednesday night or Thursday morning, with heavy rain across Belize on Wednesday and Thursday and peak rainfall between 2-4 inches daily.  Expect flooding and road closures in some areas.  Please monitor local news for updates about the storm as it develops.

All U.S. citizens living in or traveling to affected areas should monitor local weather reports, follow directions from local officials, and take other appropriate actions as needed, including:

  1. Review your family/emergency plan and supplies.
  2. Avoid out of district travel.
  3. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters.
  4. Drive slowly and put on your hazard lights when driving in heavy rain.
  5. Fill your gas tanks in vehicles prior to the storm.
