Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Belmopan, Belize

Location:  Belize

Belize Security Advisory: Upcoming BNTU (Belize National Teachers Union) PSU (Public Service Union), NTUCB (National Trade Union Congress of Belize), Belize Nurses Association Demonstrations.

The U.S. Embassy would like to inform American citizens in Belize of possible demonstrations beginning tomorrow through next week.  

Please avoid areas where demonstrations or protests might be taking place and exercise caution within the vicinity of any gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.  Please use alternate routes to avoid the demonstration when possible.  Do not attempt to drive through any large groups and barricades encountered on the street.

We urge you to monitor local media reports for additional information.  Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates.  Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities.  

The following is a list of possible locations and activities. The list below is not inclusive, and other unscheduled demonstrations may occur. 

Friday, April 16th, 2021 

10 a.m. to noon Picketing of Businesses that owe taxes 

St. Edmund Campion in Valley of Peace Village, Raymond Sheppard in Roaring Creek Village, Baptist Highschool in Belmopan (adjacent to El Rancho on the George Price Highway) and other schools in the area will likely join the demonstrations.

Monday April 19th, 2021 

7:45 – 8:00 a.m. & 11:45 a.m. – 13:30 p.m. hours Blocking of all entrances into Belmopan.

Tuesday April 20th, 2021

Possible boycotts of fuel stations around Belize.

Wednesday April 21st, 2021

Possible boycott of Belize Tele Media Limited (BTL) for the day.  

Thursday April 22nd, 2021

Demonstrations against corruption blocking main highways around Belmopan. 

Monday April 26th, 2021

11a.m. Teachers Walkout of Schools.
